ABOUT JOHN WOODEN

John Wooden was born in 1910 and died just a few months shy of his 100th birthday. He was an American basketball player but was perhaps most fondly remembered as a coach. Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood" Wooden led UCLA to ten NCAA national championships in a 12 year period. Under his leadership UCLA broke records including winning an incredible seven championships in a row. Unsurprisingly, he was named national coach of the year over five times. His playing career was also hugely successful having been the first player to be named basketball All-American three times. He went on to inspire greats such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and is widely recognised as one of the greatest figures in basketball history.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to his autobiography, Wooden turned down an offer to coach the Los Angeles Lakers from owner Jack Kent Cooke that may have been ten times what UCLA was paying him.
