When Angelou was just 8 years old she was raped by her mothers abusive boyfriend, Freeman. Angelou confided in her brother who then told the rest of the family. This led to her uncles exacting revenge by murdering Freeman. Believing that her words had got him killed, Angelou went mute for five years. It was during this period of silence that Angelou developed her incredible memory and love of literature. It also meant that she became incredibly aware, and attentive, of the world around her.
